Heritage Jacquard Handloom Weaving

The Jacquard mechanism was patented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804, with the purpose of speeding up and automating part of the weaving process which was previously done by hand. His invention built on the earlier inventions of Basile Bouchon and Jacques Vaucanson, but was taken up by the industry due to its commercial practicalities. Traditionally, looms used a shaft mechanism which lifted threads in a row together, and severely limited the capabilities of how complex a design could be. The weaver would either be limited to simple designs by the shafts, or need the assistance of a draw boy to lift individual threads using a system of cords and pulleys at the weaver’s command, only producing 2cm of fabric a day. Joseph Marie Jacquard likely worked for his father as a draw boy, inspiring him to build the mechanism which would revolutionise textiles production.

 

The Jacquard mechanism could lift each thread in a repeat individually, allowing hundreds of different lift combinations, and much more complex designs, all automatically. Each design woven on a Jacquard loom has its own set of punchcards – a set of instructions - which communicate to the loom which threads to lift, and therefore what pattern to weave. The weaver at the bottom of the loom could now simply pass the weft thread back and forth through the warp threads, and the pattern would appear in the fabric automatically. Jacquard looms powered by water, steam and eventually electricity were also popular, however Jacquard handlooms like those in Paradise Mill are completely powered by the weaver, and allow for more control over the fabric produced.

Each set of punchcards for the loom to read contains hundreds of individual punchcards, laced together into a loop. Each punchcard holds the possibility for (on our loom) 384 holes. Whether or not there’s a hole decides if the corresponding thread at the bottom of the loom will lift or not. Where there’s a hole in the card, a needle will fall through the card, the corresponding hook will lift, and the thread at the bottom of the loom will also lift. If there isn’t a hole, the needle will fall against the card, the corresponding hook won’t lift, and nor will the thread. This creates a gap between lifted and not-lifted warp threads, which we weavers call the shed. The weft thread will be sent through this gap in a shuttle, after which the Jacquard mechanism will read the next punchcard, and the next line in the design. Although it sounds complex, the simplicity of this invention revolutionised the textiles industry.

Directly inspired by the Jacquard mechanism, Charles Babbage patented his analytical engine in 1837 - this is widely considered to be the world’s first computer. The jacquard mechanism is therefore one of the first examples of binary code - where the Jacquard mechanism uses ‘holes’ or ‘no holes’, the computer uses ones and zeros. Ada Lovelace is credited as having recognised the immense potential of Babbage’s invention. It is hard to imagine a world without computers and smartphones, which exemplifies the vast impact of the invention of the Jacquard mechanism.

It is reasonable to suggest that the Jacquard mechanism was the Artificial Intelligence of its day – automating a process that would otherwise have been done manually, and losing people their jobs. French mill workers would throw their clogs into the machine in protest when it was installed in their mills, which is possibly where we get the word ‘sabotage’, the French word for clog being ‘sabot’. It is comforting to know that our ancestors had similarly fraught relationships with technology as we have today with AI, and this story celebrates how the Jacquard mechanism can tell us more about ourselves and our histories than simply in the realm of textiles. Jacquard handlooms are a snapshot of a pivotal moment in history, and celebrate human ingenuity, and the growth of our societies and communities alongside technology.
